Sustained military operations under Operation HADIN KAI have forced more senior commanders of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) to surrender, in what security sources described as another major blow to the terrorist group’s leadership.

According to Counter Insurgency and Security publication, Zagazola Makama on X, the commanders abandoned their camps following weeks of coordinated land and air offensives, precision strikes and intelligence-led operations targeting terrorist enclaves across the North-East.

The surrendered commanders are currently being held at a secure military facility, where they are undergoing profiling and intelligence debriefing in line with established operational procedures.

Their identities have not been disclosed for security reasons.

Military sources said the latest development reflects the increasing pressure being mounted on terrorist groups by troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, whose sustained operations have targeted insurgents’ logistics bases, supply routes and command centres across Borno State and other parts of the region.

The sources noted that the operations have significantly disrupted the terrorists’ movement, weakened their supply chains and reduced their ability to launch large-scale attacks, forcing many fighters and commanders to abandon the insurgency.

The latest surrender comes days after dozens of terrorists laid down their arms in different parts of the theatre of operations.

Military records indicate that at least 76 terrorist fighters, along with some of their family members, voluntarily surrendered to troops within the past week.

Security analysts attributed the increasing number of surrenders to sustained military pressure, deteriorating conditions in terrorist camps, dwindling supplies and growing internal divisions within ISWAP’s leadership.

According to Zagazola Makama, intelligence obtained from the surrendered commanders is expected to assist ongoing military operations by providing information on the group’s leadership structure, logistics network, recruitment channels, planned attacks and the locations of remaining terrorist hideouts.

Military authorities reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining the current operational tempo, stressing that offensive operations would continue until all terrorist elements are either neutralised or compelled to surrender.

They added that troops remain focused on consolidating recent gains and restoring lasting peace and security across the North-East.
