The Rivers State House of Assembly has resumed sitting for the first time since the lifting of the state of emergency, with only one agenda on its Order Paper.
At the end of the brief session, the House adjourned sitting until Monday, 22 September 2025, after adopting six key resolutions aimed at consolidating peace and restoring normal governance in the state.
Top on the list was a commendation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for restoring peace and lifting the state of emergency declared in March.
The lawmakers also resolved to abide by all conditions and agreements reached for the sustenance of peace, and called on Governor Simininalayi Fubara to submit the list of his commissioner-nominees for screening.
In addition, the Assembly said it would immediately commence work on an appropriation law for the remaining part of the year.
The lawmakers further urged the House to:
-
Investigate what transpired during the emergency rule with regards to spending from the consolidated revenue fund, contract awards and other expenditures.
-
Critically review old legislations that are outdated and enact new laws to address contemporary realities.
The session marks the Assembly’s first formal sitting since the end of the state of emergency and signals its intent to restore normal legislative activities in the state.
