The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists observing fasting periods to take regular breaks on long journeys to reduce the risk of road accidents.

Mr. Nasir Mohammed, FRSC Commander for the Sagamu-Ore-Benin Expressway corridor, gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ota on Friday.

He explained that the guidance is particularly important as both Christian and Muslim faithfuls begin their respective fasting periods.

Catholic Christians commenced the Lenten season on Wednesday, marked by 40 days of fasting, while Muslim faithfuls are observing Ramadan, which also involves extended periods of fasting.

Mohammed cautioned that fatigue and dehydration could impair driving performance during fasting, urging motorists to take sufficient rest before returning to the wheel.

He further warned against over-speeding and unsafe overtaking, stressing that strict adherence to traffic rules is essential for safety.

“We are appealing to motorists, especially Muslims and Christians who are fasting, to always observe the rest after every four hours of driving, to prevent avoidable loss of lives.

“Also, all motorists are enjoined to drive to stay alive; wishing all safer roads and fuller life,” he said.

The FRSC reiterated that careful driving and timely rest are critical measures to protect lives during religious fasting periods.
