The House of Representatives has called for concerted efforts to contain the outbreak of cholera in the country.
It described the outbreak, which has claimed five lives and left over 60 persons hospitalised in Lagos state, as part of a larger national issue.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, NCDC, says it has documented 65 confirmed cases and 30 deaths between January 1 and June 11, 2024, across 96 local governments in 30 states.
The Chairman, Committee on Healthcare Services, Dennis Idahosa, says there is a need for immediate and coordinated action.
His words: “We must act quickly and decisively to address this cholera outbreak. Mobilizing resources and implementing preventive measures are crucial to safeguarding our citizens.”
He says community engagement and education are essential in fighting the spread of cholera.
He urged citizens to follow hygiene practices and report any suspected cases to health authorities.
He added that ensuring access to clean drinking water, proper sanitation and waste disposal, and maintaining good hygiene practices, including regular handwashing, are key to preventing cholera.
