Pope Leo XIV has paid a heartfelt tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis, recalling him with “particular affection” during Easter celebrations.

Speaking in the light of the resurrection of Christ, the pontiff noted that Pope Francis “returned to the Lord” on Easter Monday last year, marking the solemn anniversary of his passing.

The remembrance formed part of Easter reflections, as the Church honoured the life, legacy and spiritual leadership of the late pope, whose tenure was widely associated with humility, compassion and advocacy for the poor and vulnerable.

Pope Francis who was the first Jesuit Pope, the first Latin American and the first born outside Europe since the Syrian Pope in the 8th century.

He became the Pope after the abdication of Pope Benedict in 2013 and was Pope until 2025 when he had a series of ailment before finally dying on Easter Monday April 21. 2025.

He was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires on 17th December 1936.

He was aged 88 Years.

He was later succeeded by Robert Francis Prevost an American, who was also the first American to be elected by the College of Cardinals and now goes by the name Pope Leo XIV.
