The Sokoto Police Command said it will soon regulate the operations of commercial tricycle operators as part of measures to reduce insecurity in the state.

A new order prohibits operators from covering their tricycles with curtains, and empowers police to stop and search.

Suleiman Nasir  reports that commercial Tricycles, popularly known as Kekenapep, are the one of the major means of public transportation for day-to-day activities in Sokoto metropolis second only to commercial motorcycles

The tricycle operators in Sokoto are patronised mostly by married women, female students as a means of transportation to schools, workplaces, hospitals and markets .

The operators are in the habit of covering the tricycle with curtains an act that has become the subject of controversy and rising concerns about insecurity among residents in the caliphate

In a bid to curtail the rising security threats in the state,  the Nigeria Police through a press statement signed by the Police Public relations officer,  issued an order banning the to cover commercial tricycles operating in the state.

Resident described the ban as a right step in the right direction, but operators of the tricycle think differently even as they pledge their support to the Nigeria police in their bid to rid Sokoto of crime and criminality.

The police has requested that the general public not to be alarmed by this devlopment, as it is a measure employed towards ensuring the safety of the people of Sokoto and environs.
