Northern governors have been urged to the gap in education and capacity building in Nigeria.
The call was made at a press conference held in Yola, the capital of Adamawa state, by the Northeast Youth Progressive Union and the Coalition for Democratic Rights Group.
The two groups decried a disparity in development, including human capacity, between the country’s northern and southern regions.
According to them, Governor Yusuf has paid for the tuition, food, and lodging of 1001 postgraduate students in India over the last five months.
Chairman of the Northeast Youth Progressive Union, Kabir Sambo told journalists that Governor Yusuf also paid “the Senior Secondary school examination fees (NECO) for 57,000 students, Tuition fees of 7,000 students at Bayero University, and tertiary institution students in Kano are now granted 50% discount on their fees.”
“He has reopened 26 Skills acquisition institutes for training and empowerment of residents of Kano State. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has also procured and distributed education support materials to over nine thousand schools with over three million pupils benefited from uniforms, books, computers and other teaching/learning aids,’’ Sambo said
“These are some of the programmes that we know will not only help develop Kano and its people, but will have a knock on positive effect in Northern Nigeria as a whole. These strides in Kano have gotten the people of Kano excited. In actual fact, the youth of Northern Nigeria have had their hope in future development renewed. We need all Northern Governors to emulate these steps by Kano and to prioritize education and human capital development,” Dr Kabir said.
He stated that the youths in Northern Nigeria are aware that the Tribunal sacked the Kano State governor, but they are watching the appeal process, believing that justice, which is the bedrock of democracy, will be served so that Nigeria’s democracy is not jeopardized.
