Team Nigeria has recorded an impressive start at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana, winning a total of eight medals after the first two days of competition.
The medal haul includes two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals across track and field events.
This was disclosed in a statement by the State House on Thursday, May 14.
Leading Nigeria’s charge was Tobi Amusan, who clinched gold in the women’s 100m hurdles after finishing in 12.83 seconds to secure her third consecutive continental title.

Nigeria’s second gold medal came in the mixed 4x400m relay, where the quartet of Ezekiel Asuquo, Toheebat Jimoh, Victor Sampson and Patience Okon-George stormed to victory with a time of 3:16.41.
In the women’s 100m final, Rosemary Chukwuma settled for silver after a tightly contested race, clocking 11.488 seconds, just 0.003 seconds behind Cameroon’s Herverge Kole Etame.
Nigeria also claimed silver medals in the women’s discus throw and hammer throw events.
Divine Oladipo finished second in the discus throw with a mark of 55.37m during her international debut for Nigeria, while Sade Olatoye secured silver in the women’s hammer throw with a best effort of 69.60m.
For the bronze medals, Chidera Ezeakor placed third in the men’s 100m final after recording 10.318 seconds.

In the women’s 100m hurdles, Adaobi Tabugbo claimed bronze with a time of 13.26 seconds.
Nigeria completed a double podium finish in the women’s discus throw as Obiageri Amaechi secured bronze with a throw of 53.23m.
