The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is collaborating with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to combat criminal activity in the telecommunications sector.

Professor Umar Danbatta, Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, signed the Memorandum of Understanding between the agency and the Commission after addressing senior management staff of NSCDC in the South West geopolitical zone at an exclusive workshop organised by the Commission.

Danbatta recalled that the NCC has been collaborating with relevant law enforcement agencies, particularly the NSCDC, on protecting the telecom sector from all types of criminal behavior. Danbatta was represented at the workshop by the Commission’s Director, Compliance Monitoring and Enforcement, Ephraim Nwokonneya.

The meeting explored strategies for enforcement of laws, subsidiary legislations, and extant guidelines to arrest perpetrators of all forms of criminality such as theft and vandalism of telecommunications infrastructure, the illegal use of fraudulently-registered Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards and operating without license among others.

He emphasised that while the NSCDC officers have been of tremendous assistance, the objective of the workshop was to constantly engage and update them on new trends and existing regulations, requiring concerted efforts for their implementation towards enhancing sanity in the telecom sector.

Danbatta claimed that the NSCDC and other organizations had performed well with the aid of security officers in conducting raid drills, removing fraudulently registered SIM cards that had been spotted in use, and raising awareness of the need to secure vital national telecom infrastructure.
