The Rivers State House of Assembly has extended the deadline of invitation to officials of the state electoral commission by 72 hours.

The Chairman and Commissioners of RSIEC are expected to appear before the House to answer questions about the build-up to the rescheduled Local Government Election.

The House reconvened on what was meant to be the first day of its 12-week recess with just one item on the agenda.

To receive the management of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission at the expiration of the 48-hour ultimatum to appear before them.

The Chairman, a retired judge of the state high court and his team are under the lawmakers’ radar for pushing ahead with the local government election in defiance to the House of Assembly’s resolution.

Despite their obvious disappointment, the lawmakers opted to give them more time.

All 25 members present voted to wait until March 7th for the RSIEC officials to honour the invitation.

After Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s 48-hour deadline lapsed, lawmakers are still waiting for the budget presentation and commissioner nominees to be screened.

The House cautioned that if the summoned officials refuse to fulfil the invitation one more time, it may be forced to exercise the powers under section 129 of the 1999 constitution to order the arrest of all of them.
