Lawmakers call for more holistic approach to mitigate impact of floods

The Nigerian Senate has urged relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Government to fast track the release of relief funds captured in the 2023 Budget to mitigate the impact of floods that have devastated many parts of the Country.

The resolution by the Upper legislative Chamber followed a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Ogun East, Senator Gbenga Daniel on the persistent flooding in his region and across the Country.

Early warnings by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency on the flood outlook for the year 2023 reveals that 178 Local Government Areas in 32 states and the FCT are at high risk of flooding as a result of heavy Rainfall .

The manifestation of these Predictions is already being recorded in some parts of the Country and has caused panic among citizens, leaving many displaced and lives and properties destroyed almost on a daily basis.

At Wednesdays Proceedings, Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel moved a motion for the urgent intervention of the Senate .

The devastating effect of flood devastation is an issue that resonates with many other lawmakers in the upper legislative chamber.

Their constituents are at the receiving end of this natural disaster.

They are all united on the need to explore a more holistic approach to confronting the problem.

The Nigerian Senate has urged the Federal Government to fast track the release of relief funds as well as explore the dredging of the River Niger and Benue as a Permanent solution to solve the Crisis.

For the Lawmakers, a timely response to these predictions will certainly go a long way in saving lives and property.

They want the Federal Government to focus on long lasting solutions that will convert these challenges to revenue generating opportunities.
