The Lagos State Records and Archives Bureau (LASRAB) organised a four-day upskilling training session for archivists from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in Lagos State to maintain excellence in recordkeeping and archiving standards.
The program, “Managing Public Sector Records for Sustainability and Effective Service Delivery,” aimed to improve archivists’ knowledge of modern records management procedures.
Participants were exposed to a comprehensive curriculum including Introduction to Public Records and Archives Management, Advanced Indexing and Filing Techniques, Setting SMART Goals, Team Bonding Strategies, Understanding Public Service Values, and the Principles of Integrity, Accountability and Transparency.
Delivering the welcome address, the Director-General of LASRAB, Ms. Toyin Ogunlana, described the training as a strategic investment in the professional development of archivists and the sustainability of public sector legacies.
“To stay relevant, we must be willing to unlearn old habits, learn, and relearn. The world of records management is not static but dynamic”, she emphasised.
Ms. Ogunlana further urged participants to embrace innovative approaches, reminding them that they are not just custodians of the past but stewards of the future – responsible for preserving and telling Lagos State’s story in the most accurate and impactful way for generations to come.
The sessions were facilitated by seasoned professionals. Among them was Mrs. Amina Hamzat, who led a practical session on Team Bonding. She divided the participants into groups for hands-on activities, stressing the importance of collaboration and strategic thinking in achieving organisational success.
“To stand out as a team, you must strategise. Everyone has a role to play in the organisation’s success,” she noted.
Participants expressed deep appreciation to the Director-General and organisers, noting that the training was impactful and timely. Many called for periodic refresher courses to maintain momentum and ensure continued professional development.
In her closing remarks, Ms. Ogunlana encouraged the archivists to view records not merely as documents but as embodiments of value. She also reminded them to prioritise their health and foster positive relationships in their work environments.
The four-day programme marks another milestone in LASRAB’s efforts to build a competent and forward-thinking workforce dedicated to delivering world-class records management across the Lagos State public service.
