The Lagos State government says it recorded 4,351 cases of gender-based violence (GBV) between the 1st of January and 31st of November 2022.

The commissioner for women Affairs and poverty alleviation said this at a parley to announce activities for this year’s 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.

The ministry says reported cases in 2022 cover all forms of violence largely against women and that in the month of November alone,
237 females and 38 males reported cases of violence in the state.

The statistics do not emanate from the women’s Affairs Ministry alone but include other Ministries departments and agencies concerned. It was also observed that women sometimes withdraw their complaints due to family interference.

The commissioner also seeks more partnership from police officers as they respond to such cases.

Lagos is not left out of the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.

An annual International Campaign which runs from November the 25th which is the International Day for elimination of violence against women till December the 10th Human Rights Day.

Residents are also urged to use the toll-free emergency number in Lagos 767 to speak out against all forms of abuse and utilise other support structures in the state.
