The general manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), has ordered owners and developers of structures now under construction that exceed the permitted building plan to return to the original plan that the State Government approved and granted them.
The LASBCA’s Director of Enforcement, Mr. Olusoji Olopa, conveyed Oki’s directive while the Agency was conducting routine monitoring and enforcement operations in the State’s Eti-Osa and Surulere regions.
The LASBCA said that the affected buildings have exceeded the number of floors approved by the authorities without proper procedures and insisted that they should revert to the original plan.
Oki reiterated the need for strict adherence to the new directives by property owners/developers, stating that the move by the government is meant to compel compliance to building approvals as part of strategies to nip in the bud the menace of building collapse in the State.
He emphasised the importance of other relevant agencies and professional bodies in the building industry joining forces to assist the government in stemming the tides of building collapse in the State through their professional inputs.
Mr Oki pointed out that it is no longer business as usual, advising the building public to value life and do the right thing at all times.
LASBCA sealed 7 other buildings under construction in the Eti-Osa and Surulere axis of the State during monitoring and enforcement exercises for various building contraventions ranging from construction without approval/authorisation to breaking Government seals, amongst others.
In addition, the agency directed that the management of 1004 Estate, Victoria Island, conduct a Non-Destructive Test to determine the structural stability of one of the estate’s blocks, which was discovered to be visibly distressed by Agency officers while on routine monitoring of the area.
