The Jigawa State Police Command has launched a one-day, statewide sensitization campaign aimed at keeping communities safe and crime-free during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

The exercise, under the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) was carried out simultaneously across all Divisional Police Headquarters in the state.

It followed a directive by the Commissioner of Police, CP Dahiru Muhammad.

Divisional Police Officers mobilised officers, youths, community leaders and other stakeholders to engage residents on the dangers of crime and social vices.

Key issues discussed included cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime, vandalism, mob action, gender-based violence and other threats to public safety.

The police also engaged religious leaders, especially church leaders, to strengthen trust and cooperation between the police and the public, and to ensure peaceful, hitch-free celebrations.

POCACOV is a national police initiative designed to prevent crime through community engagement, youth re-orientation and early intervention, an approach security experts say is critical as Nigeria records a high youth population vulnerable to crime recruitment.

The Jigawa State Police Command says security deployment has been stepped up across the state and urges residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through emergency channels.

The Command reassures the public of its commitment to community-based policing and sustained peace before, during and after the festive season.
