UN Court orders Israel to stop military campaign in Gaza

The International Court of Justice ordered Israel on Friday to do more to prevent the killing and harm of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

The court said this in a major ruling that is part of the case assessing whether genocide is taking place and will add to pressure to change course in the military operation.

The session of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday is part of a case brought by South Africa alleging that Israel is committing genocide.

Both countries testified when the lawsuit was opened two weeks ago. Israel has vehemently denied the allegations.

The court cannot enforce a verdict against Israel, but it would be politically significant.

According to the Health Ministry in Gaza, over 25,000 Palestinians, largely women and children, have been killed and tens of thousands injured since Israel launched its offensive, which was started by a Hamas strike on October 7.

South Africa, which firmly supports the Palestinians, requested that the court grant nine temporary measures, including a halt to Israeli military activities, while it investigates the claim of genocide. A decision on the latter is not expected for several years.

Israel reacted angrily to the genocide allegations, accusing South Africa of twisting the truth. It claimed the right to self-defense and targeted Hamas fighters rather than Palestinian civilians.
