Over fifty communities in riverine areas of four local governments in Kebbi state which suffered from devastating floods, have benefitted from assorted relief materials to cushion damages done to their houses and farmlands.
The Managing Director of the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), Abubakar Sadiq-Yelwa advised members of the affected communities to always yield to expert advise on flooding
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency NiMet had earlier predicted that imminent high risk flooding is expected in some selected states across the six geopolitical regions of Nigeria
The agency also warned that above normal rainfall conditions were expected across the northern states of Sokoto, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno, Bauchi, Gombe as well as Kebbi and Kaduna states.
The agency also predicted medium risk flooding in these states if drainages were not properly cleared and managed
Months after this prediction, over twenty seven out of the thirty six states in Nigeria have experienced a devastating flooding.
The National Emergency Management Agency NEMA says this has affected over five hundred thousand persons with over a hundred thousand persons displaced.
Kebbi state is one of the affected states as over fifty communities in four local governments of Shanga, Koko-Besse, Dendi and Bagudo, were affected
Thousands of hectares of farmlands, houses and live stock were destroyed, with an unspecified number of lives lost.
The Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) is hoping to help mitigate this disaster, by donated relief materials to affected communities across the four affected local government areas in Kebbi state
They also advise the community members to always yield to expert advise and avoid building on water ways
Aside the relief materials, members of the affected communities also benefitted from free medical examinations and treatment as a result of the shock many of the community members went through as a result of the loss they suffered
