Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State has granted amnesty to forty sixty inmates serving different jail terms in Gusau Medium Correctional Center.
Among them are eleven convicts on death row and two none indigenes who have served in three different correctional Facilities in the country
The Governor premised his decision on the recommendations of the Zamfara state Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy
The Zamfara state Government has facilitated the release of some inmates as part of the state pardon to help reintegrate them into the society
They are forty six inmates serving different jail terms at the Gusau medium correctional center
Among them are eleven inmates on death row and two non- indigenes
This is in line with the provisions of section 212 of 1999 constitution as amended
The Zamfara state commissioner for Justice says the decision follows the recommendation of the state Committee on the prerogative of mercy
The move according to the Government is to extend a hand of love to the inmates who have repented
Mr. Junaidu testified to the effect that the convicts had changed from their bad ways and have become good citizens.
Though the Development is coming less than two months to the General election, but authorities insist it is not Politically motivated
Some of the freed inmates who spent 18years in detention say they learned trades while serving their jail terms and that will help them settle down in the society
They promise not to go back to their old way of life which led to their Incarceration
The Zamfara state government says the pardon is another opportunity for the freed inmates to change for the better and further warns youths against any unholy act the will affect the peace enjoyed in the state.
Bandits Abduct Ex-Army Colonel, Yandoto, His Two Children, Others
Suspected Armed bandits have kidnapped a retired army colonel Rabi’u Garba Yandoto two of his children and other travellers in Zamfara
The Ex- Senior Military officer and his children were abducted Sunday night in an ambush laid by the gunmen along Gusau-Tsafe road, while on their way to Yandoto, their hometown in Tsafe Local Government area of the state
Colonel Yandoto (rtd) was on his way to his hometown together with his two children last Sunday night when he was ambushed by bandits and whisked away to an unknown destination via the forest” our source said.
“There are other persons that the bandits kidnapped almost at same point and were all taken to the bush together” he added
“We heard gunshots and immediately we started running into the bush for fear of being killed or kidnapped by the bandits, but we later realized that Colonel Garba Yandoto was their main target”.
The Kidnap Victim, Colonel Garba Yandoto retired was a former Boss of the Zamfara state Road Traffic Agency ZAROTA and is a member of the APC, a closest political rival to Senator Kabiru Garba Marafa, which many feels they are not on thesame page Politically and has been campaigning against Marafa’s Senatorial ambition for Zamfara Central in the forthcoming General election in 2023.
The Kidnap Victim is the leader of Zamfara APC political group known as “Wake da Shinkafa” meaning”Mix All” a Political group with the sole aim of ensuring that Sen. Kabiru Marafa did not win the senatorial seat come 2023.
Efforts to hear from the Police in Zamfara yielded no result, as the command Spokesman Mohammed Shehu failed to revert to our correspondent hours after putting calls across for police comment.
