Gov. Alia calls for more support to aid IDPs in Benue

The International Organisation for Migration, IOM, has disclosed that Benue State currently hosts over five hundred thousand displaced persons, accounting for 38% of the total displaced population in North Central part of the country.

The Chief of Mission of IOM, Paola Pace, disclosed this during an official visit to the state governor, Hyacinth Alia who called for increased support from the international communities.

The Benue Governor, led a delegation from the International Organisation for Migration, IOM and the European civil protection and humanitarian aid operations to the Internally Displaced persons camp in Guma local government.

The moniker “Mega Camp” refers to one of the largest camps, which houses over 3,700 people.

Governor Alia, who earlier received the presidents of both international organisations at the Government House in Makurdi, called for enhanced support to aid Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in the State, particularly in the areas of education, agriculture, and the safety of displaced communities.

The Humanitarian Chiefs assured the Governor of their organisations’ commitment to supporting the State Government’s peace building efforts aimed at returning the IDPs to their ancestral homes as soon as possible

With this visit, displaced persons in Benue stands hopeful of returning to their ancestral homes as soon as possible.
