FUTA VC seeks adequate data to tackle menace of climate change

The Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology, Akure, Professor Adenike Oladiji has stressed the need for deployment of adequate data, through hydrological means to tackle the menace of climate change.

The Vice Chancellor spoke while handing over four automatic hydrological sensors to the Benin-Owena River Basin Authority, which was presented to the university by the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use.

The West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use is a large-scale research-focused climate service organisation, established to tackle climate challenges.

The centre, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, operates in ten African countries.

At the event, the organisation presented four automatic hydrological sensors to the management of Federal University of Technology, Akure.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Adenike Oladiji, who handed over the sensors to the Benin Owena Basin Authority, stressed the need for adequate data to investigate climate change and its effects.

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Development, Professor Sunday Oluyamo, the Vice Chancellor added that climate change is affecting human activities.

Nigeria’s Representative on the board of the centre, Professor Chinedum Nwajiuba said the organisation is committed to providing data to address climate change-related issues.

Other speakers also stressed the importance of having the automatic hydrological sensors.
