Former UK Chancellor, Rishi Sunak is set to become the UK’s next prime minister after his co-contender for the Tory leadership seat, Penny Mordaunt , dropped out of the race.

Sunak has so far received 93 Conservative MP endorsements.

Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is set to return to London on Saturday after a vacation in the Caribbean, is second with 44 endorsements.

Sunak and Johnson have yet to officially declare their intentions in the race to succeed Liz Truss, who resigned as Prime Minister on Thursday after only 45 days in office, the shortest period in British history.

The contenders have until 2 p.m. on October 24 to get the required 100 endorsements. If three reach the threshold, Conservative MPs will knock one out in a ballot on the same day.

With the Conservatives holding a large majority in parliament and able to ignore calls for a general election for another two years, the new party leader will become prime minister – Britain’s fifth in six years.
