The Federal Government says there is no truth in reports that it has decided to remove Christian Religious Knowledge and Islamic Religious Knowledge from the school curriculum.
This position was made clear at the briefing after this week’s Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja.
The Federal Executive Council also decided to embark on a ministerial retreat to look into the continued deterioration of standards in various areas in the Education sector.
Statehouse Correspondent Tai Amodu reports that the standard of education in the country, has been on a free fall over the past five years in spite ofinterventions introduced by the Nigerian Government to check the slide
It had necessitated the drawing up of a road map by theEducation authorities suggesting new interventions and policies needed to ensure a drastic reversal in the fortunes of the education sector, and this wassubmitted at this week’s Federal Cabinet meeting
Council on the other hand, believes matters have gone beyond merely presenting a blueprint, insisting that there is need for a ministerial retreat to extensively discuss how Education in the country can be resuscitated
Also up for clarification at this meeting, were reportsalleging that the country’s education authorities had scrapped Christian Religious Knowledge from the school curriculum
Speculation had been on the rise on the subject and matters came to a head when the Christian Association of Nigeria had on a recent visit to Acting president Yemi Osinbajo,demanded a reversal of the policy
But the Education Minister insists that not only is this far from the truth but that this government had on resumption, actually reversed a similar policy put in place for implementation by the immediate past Jonathan Administration
Adamu was also quick to disclose that the National Education Council had approved that history as a subject, should be re-introduced to the school curriculum so that youths could learn from past antecedents in the country.
