The federal government has said it intends to remodel the Murtala Muhammed International Airport terminal, in Lagos and operate it alongside the new one built in December.

The building will not be demolished, but old infrastructure will be replaced to fast track passenger facilitation.

To contain the projected surge of 10 million passengers per annum by the year 2030, the federal government says it plans to rebuild the 40 year old terminal in line with the projected annual passenger growth of 7.4%. The new terminal is expected to compliment operations.

Commissioned in 1979, the Lagos airport was built with a capacity of 250,000 passengers annually but in 2017, it processed about 6,273, 545 passengers.

Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika says the reconstruction of the terminal will cost N14 billion.

The minister had also said that concessioning the airports will usher in infrastructural renewal but Aviation Labour Unions are against it. They are afraid it could lead to job losses.

But the unions support establishment of a national carrier, maintenance, repair and overhaul facility and aerotropolis as they are expected to create jobs for Nigerians.
