In a major move to address recurrent flooding and improve environmental conditions, the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State has commenced a large-scale Canal Rehabilitation and Flood Control Project across several flood-prone communities.
The project was officially flagged off on Sunday, October 12, by the Executive Chairman of the Council, Hon. Omoba Adeola Adetoro, as part of his administration’s broader agenda on environmental sustainability and public safety.
Executed by BIOGOLD Nigeria Limited, the initiative aims to mitigate the risks of seasonal flooding by clearing, dredging, and restoring canal channels while also tackling illegal dumping and poor sanitation.
“Environmental sustainability, sanitation, and flood control form a major pillar of this administration’s agenda,” Adetoro said during the launch.
“We are committed to ensuring a cleaner, safer, and more resilient Eti-Osa through proactive infrastructure and environmental interventions.”
The first phase of the project targets several high-risk areas identified for immediate intervention, including: Gbar-Aro, Mayegun, Osapa–Agungi Axis, Femi-Okunnu to Igbokushu Corridor, Busola Durosimi, Eti Community.

Contractors have been fully mobilized, and work is ongoing in several areas, with visible signs of progress reported by local residents.
The council has pledged to keep residents informed with regular updates as the project progresses. Officials say community cooperation will be key to maintaining the work being done.
In addition to immediate flood relief, the initiative is expected to enhance long-term environmental health and prevent further deterioration of infrastructure in Eti-Osa.
“This is a landmark project that addresses both emergency and long-term needs,” a council spokesperson said. “It’s not just about clearing canals, but about changing attitudes toward waste and building resilience across our communities.”
The Eti-Osa Local Government has urged residents to support the project by refraining from dumping refuse in canals and drains and to report any environmental violations to the appropriate authorities.
