The 62nd ordinary session of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government is about to open in Abuja.
The session, chaired by the President of Guinea Bissau, President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, will have speeches from him, the host President, President Muhammadu Buhari and the African Union Commission’s President, invited as a special guest.
Major highlight of the session will be the swearing in of the new President of ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray.
The meeting will immediately go into a closed door session where the reports of the mediation and security Council at ministerial level, the 2022 ECOWAS Annual report on the State of the Community, report on the 89th ordinary session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, update on the transitions in the region by ECOWAS mediators- Burkina Faso, Mali and Republic of Guinea will be considered.
Special report on ECOWAS Single currency programme will also be considered amongst other considerations.
A new chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government will emerge before the Presidents will rise from the close door meeting.
Some members of the International community from the Embassies and foreign organisations are also witnessing the opening session.
The Ground breaking and foundation laying ceremony of the new ECOWAS Secretariat was held earlier in Abuja before the start of the Summit.
Dignitaries and Presidents of other ECOWAS Member Countries, Including the Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government had arrived the venue before they were joined by President Muhammadu Buhari who performed the ground breaking and Foundation Laying Ceremony.
ECOWAS which is the West African Sub Regional grouping of Countries was established in 1976 to channel the Economies of the Countries of the West African region and ensure that they are better able to get the benefits of a single, streamlined Market.
