According to the Emergency Management Agency, attacks by bandits on six communities in Shiroro local government areas of the state started since Wednesday, and has left at least 47 persons dead.

Groups of gunmen riding motorcycles stormed into the farming and herding villages in Shiroro district of central Niger state on Sunday, firing indiscriminately and stealing cattle.

“For now, 47 bodies have been recovered,” Niger State Emergency Management Agency spokesman Ibrahim Audu Hussein told AFP.

Search and rescue teams are still recovering bodies in the bush and the final toll will be announced later,” he said.

The head of the agency mentioned that the injured are receiving treatments at various hospitals in Erena and Kuta, and others with very serious cases were referred to more advanced facilities outside the area.

It should be noted that 12 people were reportedly killed earlier in a separate incident in the state.
