The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hammed Ali (Rtd) said he will honour the invitationof the Senate but vowed not to appear in uniform.
He disclosed this on Friday while featuring on TVC’s Breakfast Show. Hammed said he was not appointed Comptroller-General of the Customs to wear uniform.
The Customs boss queried the recent debate on his mode of dressing, saying he wondered if it is the uniform that performs the function of a Comptroller general or the person in uniform.
His words: ” I was not appointed Customs Comptroller General to wear Uniform. Is it the uniform that performs the function or the person behind the uniform. I can’t really understand why the Senate is so concerned about the way I dress,” Hammed queried.
“I think what should be the concern of the Senate is whether I am doing my job well as expected or not. And not the way I appear or dress. I am not appointed to wear uniform.”
Responding to questions on the recent raid by Customs officers, Hammed said his officers have acted in accordance with the law setting up the agency. He said the Customs Service is empowered to raid any place where it perceived smuggled goods were kept. He added that many of those imported goods were smuggled into the country through various illegal borders.
