The UK’s negotiator said he is incredibly disappointed the summit did not go further. The over arcing agreement from COP27 maintained the commitment to limit global warming to 1.5 Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
The UN says breaching this threshold would expose Millions more people to potentially devastating climate impacts.
Climate activist Ronke Ige addressing the issue on TVC Breakfast said that getting the loss and damage Finance to be finally agreed upon by the negotiators is a win as this push has been ongoing for a very long time to ensure equitable justice is done.
We were pushing for things that would serve humanity, vulnerable communities at the frontline of climate crisis wherein we have Africa and also being the least contributors to the Climate crisis loss and damage financing.
“What we would have loved to see even more would have been a phase out of fossil fuels.
“There was a push for there to be a phase out of fossil fuels, coal power, and dangerous carbons but instead a clause was introduced introducing a ‘phase down’ just like what was had in COP26 as opposed to ‘phase out’, which we believe is not good for us because at the end of the day, it means we are still not addressing the root causes.
“It would also have been nice to see reparation because as much as we want to talk about loss and damage financing as though it will totally take away all of the troubles and give the justice that we have been asking for.
“We also acknowledge that there have been communities that a lot of climate crimes have been committed in like our country Nigeria.
