INEC makes U-turn on election, says polls will be conducted as scheduled Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mahmoud Yakubu, says there is no plan to postpone the 2023 general election. The Commission is also emphatic that the timetable for the elections remains sacrosanct. INEC made the clarification at the formal presentation of a clean Voters Register of 93, 469, 008 to political parties in Abuja. Chairman of the commission Mahmood Yakubu, said that more than ever before, the commission was more prepared for the 2023 general elections and had now successfully implemented 11 out of the 14 activities on schedule for the elections. Yakubu stated this at the presentation of an electronic copy of the 93,469,008 voter register to leaders of political parties on Wednesday in Abuja. Already, substantial quantities of sensitive and non-sensitive materials have been deployed to various locations across the country. Section 10 sub section 6 of the newly enacted Electoral Act, mandates INEC to present a clean register of would be voters to political parties well ahead of any election. It is in fulfilment of this provision that INEC is meeting with representatives of political parties. Nigeria now has 93, 469, 008 registered voters. Lagos state takes the lead with 7, 060, 195 and it is followed by Kano with 5, 921, 370 while Kaduna is just behind with 4, 335, 208 registered voters. In the last forty eight hours, INEC has been at the centre of discussions regarding its fears that rising insecurity may compel a shift in the 2023 general election which is about six weeks away. This has generated widespread reactions, even from the government of the day, which insists nothing will jeopardise the elections. The Political parties applauded the efforts of the Commission so far and promise their continued support towards achieving set goals. They promise to scrutinise the INEC document as they affirm their support for the elections to hold as scheduled “The last batch of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) has been received while the ongoing configuration of the critical technology in readiness for elections will soon be completed. “In the last two days, we commenced the airlifting of other sensitive materials to States across the country. “Already, some of the materials for 17 States in three geo-political zones have been delivered. Furthermore, 13,868,441 Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) have been printed, delivered to States and are being collected by citizens as new voters or by existing voters who applied for transfer or replacement of cards as provided by law,” Mr Yakubu said. The coast is getting clearer with eleven out of fourteen scheduled activities of INEC for the 2023 elections now executed. Nigeria now has over nine million registered voters as attention shifts to PVC collection slated to end on the 22nd of January.
