The Senator representing Imo West Osita Izunaso says agriculture remains the only way to ensure food sufficiency and boost Nigeria’s economy.

Mr. Izunaso said this at the training of women and youth on Modern Agricultural skills in Owerri the Imo State capital.

Agriculture remains the largest sector in Nigeria, that contributes an average of 24% to the nation’s GDP over the past seven years.

But the sector’s stunted growth in the recent times is due to low productivity, expensive inputs, and increasing post-harvest loss due to poor logistics and insecurity across the country.

This event was organized by the senator representing Imo West in collaboration with federal ministry of agriculture and food security.

The senator insists that Nigerians must make agriculture its main stay hence the need to train women and youth on the basics of modern Agricultural skills in a bid to lift many households out of poverty.

According to Izunaso, his commitment is to ensure people have means of livelihood especially now that times are hard.

For the participants the knowledge gained from the seminar will be taken to the rural communities to boost Agriculture.

The participants were trained in plantain, coconut and pawpaw farming and their seedlings were distributed to the participants.
