30,000 households nbenefit from food support Scheme in Osun

The Osun Indigenous food processors has lauded the leadership style of Governor Adegboyega Oyetola in strengthening the economy of the state by patronising the local food producers in the state.

Addressing Journalists in Osogbo, Chairman of the group, Tajudeen Azeez said local economy of the State will improve if successive administrations continue in the same direction.

Osun State Government began distribution of monthly food items to the vulnerable residents of the State more than one and half years ago.

Tagged ‘Ounje Ileri’, it was initiated to cushion the effects of COVID-19 on the people.

The beneficiaries were selected through the social register developed by the world Bank and findings revealed that over one million people have so far benefitted.

According to Mr Azeez, about one thousand metric tonnage of Garri has been purchased by the state government which shows that Osun farmers have produced over 4,000 tonnage of cassava tubers specifically delivered to the state government.

He added that more Garri processing centres have been established across the state which according to him are owned by young entrepreneurs and active woman.

Azeez praised the governor and stated that because of his support, there are now more job opportunities in the state, in both the local rural and urban areas.

Every month, 30,000 bags of five kilograms of rice, Gari, Semo, Wheat among others are presented to the beneficiaries through various groups.

The food items are sourced locally in the State and the suppliers are happy with the patronage of the State Government.

The State Government said aside from reducing hunger, the Programme was initiated to improve the economy.

Governor Oyetola said the scheme had in the last ten months of its inauguration, contributed to the economy of the State and general welfare and well-being of the vulnerable citizens who are the direct beneficiaries.

Also, the Commissioner for Regional Integration and Special Duties, Hon. Lekan Badmus, lauded the Governor for placing the scheme on his priority list.

Another edition of the monthly food support Scheme will hold later in the month.
