Over 3,000 illicit firearms and weapons seized by security operatives will on Thursday be destroyed by the National Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons In Kaduna State.

National Coordinator of the Center Major Gen. Abba Dikko (rtd) says the seizures were made during the conduct of military operations across war theaters within the past 18 months.

The arms to be destroyed include, Improvised and craft produced rifles, pistols, sub-machine guns, Rocket propelled grenade launchers, bolt action rifles and assault rifles.

The arms destruction exercise according to the authorities is aimed at reducing to the barest minimum, the circulation of firearms and weapons capable of causing harm to citizens.

This is in line with the efforts by Security agencies to end the spate of insecurity in the country as directed by president Muhamadu Buhari.

The Coordinator explains that the arms were largely recovered from the North-West, South-South, South-East and North-Central regions of the country.

He further notes that a mass surrender of weapons is currently being recorded in the North-East especially Borno State.

The Center for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons is under the Office of the National Security Adviser.

The Coordinator, Major Gen. Abba Dikko has also countered alleged unverified claims from some quarters that over seven million illicit arms are in circulation in Nigeria.
