The United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, has urged the Federal Government to quickly fix a new date for the National Population and Housing Census, which was initially meant to have been conducted in April.
The UNFPA Country Representative, Ulla Muller, says the outcome of such an exercise will help the country in managing its population.
It’s the formal launch of the 2023 State of the World Population Reports in Abuja.
The ceremony is a reminder that on November the 15th 2022, the world population reached 8 Billion.
Nigeria ranks 6th with an estimated population of 223,804,632.
Beyond this, the UNFPA is concerned about the rights of and choices of women.
UNFPA Representative Ulla Muller says fixing a date for the National Population and Housing Census is a first step to getting data that will aid the protection of such rights.
For the National Population Commission, getting the Federal Government to give priority to people-centred development is key.
As the administration of President Tinubu settles in, one of its first major tasks may just be to fix a date for the first ever digital census.
