Government must do something fast about Brain Drain – Expert

Government must address Brain Drain to ensure National Development - Expert

Graphical Representation of Brain Drain

The Federal Government has been urged to do something fast about the phenomenon of brain drain to ensure that it does not affect the nations’ development adversely.

Investment analyst, Olufemi Ajilore, disclosed this while speaking to TVC News Theophilus Elamah, on Business Nigeria.

Olufemi Ajilore who was speaking on the issue of the effect of Brain Drain on the Nations’ Development said Brain Drain though not a new development is worrisome now.

He listed reason why he thinks the trend now is worrisome to include the fact that the current exodus which he likened to what happened in the 80’s is because it is not restricted to a Sector.

He said that everywhere you look now, everyone seems to be leaving from the Medical Sector where you have Doctors, Financial, Accountants and even Technicians and Artisans are all leaving droves.

He disclosed that the issue is not just Brain Drain for the sake of it but an issue where people are being drawn towards opportunities that abound in Other parts of the World.

He said this is not bad in itself adding that even people who are financially capable in Nigeria always look for opportunities for medical treatment outside Nigeria.

On what the impact of the current brain drain will mean for Nigeria as a nation, he said the first one is the fact that there will be a gap in manpower training since most people who will normally be there to show fresh Workers on the Job the ropes and impart in them their first experience on how to do things especially in the Health Sector will not be there making it more challenging to get quality manpower in the Sector.

He said the nation will also need to bear the Cost of what he said is Labour Toll Back which is the additional Cost of training people who will take over the positions being vacated by those who are leaving.

He listed areas that the government must address to reverse the effects of Brain Drain to include accessible and quality Education for most Nigerians, better Healthcare provision and aggressive implementation of Economic Policies that will have direct impact on the lives of the People.
