World bank compensates victims of Katsina storm water drainage

The Katsina state government in collaboration with the World Bank has flagged off payment of compensation to residents to be affected by the construction of storm water drainage projects.

Most of the gullies and streams to be worked on have existed for more than forty years causing floods that have claimed many lives and property.

The projects to be undertaken in four selected sites will  cost about twenty four billion naira.

The payment of compensation to affected people is a final pointer to the commencement of over 40 kilometres streatch of storm water drainage projects in four local governments in the state.

The beneficial local governments include: jibia, katsina, malumfashi and funtua.

Ecological issues and environmental degradation are fundamental challenges that have continued to pose threat to the existence of man.

The Katsina state ministry of environment, has in the last four years successfully executed 120 Ecological projects in 150 locations in the state, reclaiming Farm lands and other areas affected by erosion.

The Nigerian Erossion and watershed management project (newmap) explains that the World Bank project is committed to reducing vulnerability to soil erosion in perticipating states.

The beneficiaries commended the efforts made to protect the livelihood of the communities affected and pledge support for the success of the project.

The monies paid are compensation for those whose houses farms or valuables like economic trees will be affected in the course of the project.
