Vote counting underway in Algeria’s parliamentary election

Image result for Vote counting underway in AlgeriaVote counting has begun in Algeria’s parliamentary election, a ballot overshadowed by low oil prices and concerns over the health of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

Turnout was low in the polls which many Algerians say offer little change in a system dominated since independence in 1962 by the National Liberation Front.


Scathing satirical videos on social media captured a mood of apathy among younger voters.

The FLN and the pro-government National Rally for Democracy are widely expected to win against a divided opposition that includes leftists and Islamist party alliances. Smaller parties have boycotted the vote.


The interior ministry will announce the results later today.
