The United States has praised the determination and ambition often referred to as the “Nigerian hustling spirit,” crediting it for Nigerians’ outstanding achievements across various sectors.

Highlighting this drive, the US government says it continues to welcome young Nigerians eager to pursue higher education in American institutions, keeping its “doors ajar” for those seeking academic and professional growth.

Speaking at the 2025 EducationUSA Fair held in Abuja, Public Diplomacy Officer at the US Embassy, Brian Neubert, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to supporting Nigerian students.

The event, themed “Empowering Future, Discover American Excellence in Education and Innovation,” served as a platform for sharing critical information about studying in the United States.

Neubert expressed the US’s enthusiasm in working alongside Nigeria to cultivate future leaders and innovators, stating: “We know that Nigerians hustle. The courses of study that are most interesting to Nigerian students are often Engineering, Business, Law and Medicine. Many thousands of these students graduate, and then they come back and build this country.”

He emphasized that the US remains proud to be a part of this journey, saying, “partnering Nigeria to empower next generation leaders, innovators and change makers.”

The growing interest in EducationUSA services across Nigeria, according to Neubert, reflects a steady rise in students exploring opportunities in the US.

“What we have seen over the decades is that many thousands of Nigerians take advantage of overseas opportunities,” he noted.

“They come back and work in academia, they come back and work as journalists in the media, they certainly come back and work in business.”

On the matter of affordability, Neubert acknowledged concerns about the cost of education abroad but pointed to available tools and resources to assist students.

“We’re providing resources so that students can make their own decisions of where they want to study and how they want to finance that study,” he explained.

He also highlighted that top-performing students may be eligible for financial support. “There are opportunities for scholarships. Exceptional students get to have scholarships. There are a variety of options for scholarships, and international students, students from Nigeria, enrich the experience for the entire community on campus,” he added.

Neubert concluded by commending the legacy of excellence that Nigerian students have built over time in American universities, contributing meaningfully both locally and globally.
