UPDATED: Xenophobic Attack: Nigeria’s Special Envoy arrives South Africa

Image result for Xenophobia: Nigeria's Special Envoy arrives JohannesburgThe special envoy President Muhmmadu Buhari sent to South Africa following the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in that country has arrived Johannesburg, South Africa.

The special envoy who is also the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar, was said to have arrived the OR Tambo Airport on Thursday evening.

Abubakar, who has been received at the O.R. Tambo International Airport by the Nigerian High Commissioner. He is expected to meet the host President in Pretoria on Friday.

But the closure of the South African High Commission in Nigeria is unpleasant news to Nigeria’s minister of information who says the country has provided enough security to keep foreign interests safe.

Lai Mohammed addressed a news conference where he appealed to Nigerians to stay away from reprisal attacks.

TVC News Celestina Iria reports that recent happenings in south Africa has led to death of many, especially Nigerians.

On 1st September 2019 riots and looting targeting shops owned by foreign nationals broke out in Jeppestown and Johannesburg, following the death of a taxi driver.

By the 3 September police had made 189 arrests for looting, around 50 businesses owned by Africans, predominantly Nigerians, reportedly
destroyed during the incident.

These happenings has led federal government of Nigeria to take decisive measures, to protect the lives and properties of its citizens in South
Africa.

One of which is the recalling of its High Commissioner to South Africa and boycotting the World Economic Forum on Africa taking place in South Africa.

The President Muhammadu Buhari has also dispatched a special envoy to meet with the president of South African Cyril Ramaphosa, while foreign
Affairs Minister has summoned the South African High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Addressing journalists, Minister of information Lai Mohammed has admonished Nigerians to desist from reprisal attacks

The minister stressed that wrong videos and disinformation are being circulated on social media to inflame the passion and distort the plight of
Nigerians in South Africa.

He urged Nigerians to be wary of the purveyors of these wrong videos and strongly warned hoodlums who may wish to hide under the peaceful protests by Nigerians, to loot.

The federal government has assured Nigerians that its ready to evacuate its citizens willing to return home from South Africa.
