Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that the U.S. tariff proposals on steel and aluminum imports would be “unacceptable” to his country.

The U.S. government announced the proposals on Thursday that steel import be slapped with a 25-percent tariff and aluminum with a 10-percent tariff.

As the largest steel and aluminum exporter to the United States, Canada shares an integrated industry with the U.S., including the automobile industry and engineering mechanical industry.

Trudeau said his government would continue to engage with U.S. officials on the issue as the tariff proposals would directly affect the industries in Canada.

Major U.S. auto manufacturers have their own assembly plants in Canada .Located in the favorable Great Lake region, their assembled products can be conveniently shipped to the United States. The U.S. motor city Detroit has already formed the industry chain of steel-making and automobile manufacturing with plants in Canada’s Ontario Province on the opposite of the Great Lake region.

Canadian government and business circles said the tariffs would not only hurt the relevant industries and job market in Canada, but also those in the U.S.
