Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully repelled a pre-dawn attack by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters on a naval base near the Lake Chad Fish Dam, neutralising dozens of insurgents in a fierce gun battle.
The failed attack, which occurred around 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, reportedly targeted newly deployed swamp bogeys provided by the Borno State Government to enhance waterway clearance operations in the Lake Chad region.
According to military sources, the terrorists encountered stiff resistance from naval personnel stationed at the base. A swift reinforcement from Baga was mobilised, leading to a coordinated response involving land troops, maritime units, and air assets under Operation Hadin Kai.
A firefight lasting over two hours ensued, forcing the attackers to retreat after suffering heavy casualties. The military confirmed that the swamp bogeys remained intact and several improvised explosive device (IED) materials were recovered from the fleeing insurgents.
While the terrorists failed to breach the main base, a limited incursion led to the destruction of an ambulance and two other vehicles. Some personnel were also injured during the attack, though their conditions were not disclosed.
Air force platforms are currently conducting follow-up aerial operations to track and eliminate any remaining terrorist elements along the waterways.
The military described the operation as a major success, highlighting ongoing efforts to secure key infrastructure in the Lake Chad region and deny insurgents freedom of movement.
This latest offensive underscores the sustained pressure by Nigerian forces on terrorist groups operating in the North-East, particularly around the volatile Lake Chad axis.
