The Taraba State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has requested assistance from the federal government in vaccination millions of cows that are at risk due to the outbreak of Taraba looses over 1,000 cows to Hemorrhagic septicemia in the state’s Sarduana Local Government Area.
As of the last count, approximately 1000 cows had died.
Sarduana Local Government Area of Taraba State has the largest heads of cattle in Nigeria and shares a border with Cameroon Republic.
However, this is not the best of times for livestock producers in the local government, who are still calculating their losses, as cows worth over 500 million naira have been lost to sickness.
The Taraba state commissioner for Agriculture praised Governor Agbu Kefas for quickly mobilizing resources to combat the outbreak of cow killer disease.
He noted that the state lacks the necessary vaccination storage facility and manpower for millions of cows, but he is seeking assistance from the federal Ministry of Agriculture to address the issues.
Veterinary professionals believe strategies to contain the spread of the disease is for governors of bordering states and local Cameroonian authorities to join forces and address the matter head on.
