Shehu Sani, the former lawmaker who represented the Kaduna Central Senatorial District, has reacted strongly to the recent proclamation by US President Donald Trump, which placed visa restrictions on 23 countries, including Nigeria.

Donald Trump, on Tuesday, approved an expanded entry restriction on foreign nationals from 24 countries, citing “demonstrated, persistent, and severe deficiencies in screening, vetting, and information-sharing” that threaten the country’s national security and public safety.

The new immigration policy was published on the White House official website in a document titled “President Donald J. Trump Further Restricts and Limits the Entry of Foreign Nationals to Protect the Security of the United States.”

The former lawmaker, in a Wednesday statement shared via his official X handle, condemned the new policy and argued that the restrictions are specifically targeted at Black Africans and the Caribbean.

Sani, however, called on Nigerians seeking to leave the country to stay back and contribute their expertise toward building the nation and positioning it among the top countries in the world.

Sani wrote, “They said the First Visa ban focused on those who engage in acts of religious persecution, and many jubilated on social media, thinking it’s only for Government officials.

“The second visa restriction is for everyone, now that Nigeria is listed among 23 others. The recent list has no Arab countries but mostly Black Africans and Caribbeans, even though safety and security was used as the basis.”

Sanni added, “The message is very clear; third-world migrants are NOT welcome. Stay back and build your country, or deal with your problems.”
