The National Youth Service Corps is under fire over allegations of abuse of office and targeted victimisation. Lawyers and activist Omoyele Sowore are calling for the immediate release of Ms. Ushie Rita Ugumaye’s discharge certificate, following what they describe as an unlawful extension of her service year.
In a petition dated August 11th, 2025, Inibehe Effiong Chambers accused a Local Government Inspector of deliberately refusing to process Ms. Ugumaye’s biometric clearance in April, describing it as retaliation for her criticism of government policies.
The lawyers claim her file was seized without cause, she was denied fair hearing, and her service year was extended on false grounds.
Today, activist Omoyele Sowore visited NYSC headquarters to demand her certificate. He said they were told the Director-General was away on an assignment. Sowore insists the corps member has served her nation and deserves her discharge certificate without delay
