The Nigerian Senate is set to investigate the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) who are being accused of engaging in unwholesome practices, awarding provisional admissions in exchange for gratification
The resolution of The Upper Legislative Chamber is the outcome of a motion moved by Senator representing Ebonyi North, Peter Nwebonyi, considered at Wednesday’s Plenary Session.
The Lawmaker queried the alleged shortchange of about 290 students already granted admission to study medicine and Surgery at the university of Nigeria ,Nsukka .
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has come under fire over allegations of unwholesome practices involving Floating admissions to students for monetary gratification.
Presenting a motion at Wednesday’s Plenary, Senator Nwebonyi expressed deep concerns over the alleged Provisional admission practice which he says is now used as a malicious tool to exploit and frustrate admission Seekers
Contributing to the motion, other Senators advised the Senate to avoid making assumptions and conclusions without giving a fair hearing to the examination body
The Senate has now directed a Joint Committee of the Senates committee on Tertiary Education and Public Petitions to carry out a wholistic probe and report back with its findings in two weeks .
Both committees are expected to invite the officials of JAMB, University of Nigeria Nssuka and the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, in the course of the probe to explain the circumstances surrounding the ‘undisclosed admission allegation.
