The Nigerian Senate has sworn in two new members to fill vacant seats in the upper chamber.
Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance now represents Anambra South, taking the seat left vacant by the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
Joseph Ikpea of the All Progressives Congress has also joined the Senate as the new representative of Edo Central, succeeding Governor Monday Okpeboholo.
With these additions, the composition of the 10th Senate now stands as follows: All Progressives Congress (APC) — 71 seats; Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — 28; Labour Party — 5; Social Democratic Party — 2; All Progressives Grand Alliance — 2; and the New Nigeria Peoples Party — 1.
Welcoming the lawmakers, Senate President Godswill Akpabio charged them to uphold the values of the legislature and the trust of the people they represent.
He urged the new Senators to study the Senate rule book and abide by its provisions at all times.
