Senate amends standing rules, conditions for eligibility of Senate Office

The Nigerian Senate has amended its standing orders to effect changes on the conditions that qualifies a Senator to vie for the Office of the President of the Senate .

According to the amendment of Standing rule 3(2) , A Senator Vying for the Seat of Senate President must have served at least one term in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria .

The Upper legislative Chamber also amended its rules to clearly define the functions and jurisdictions of new standing committees created in August

The Senate began the day’s business with an executive session that lasted for over 2 hours to deliberate on matters affecting the workings of the Senate.

After the closed Session, the upper legislative chamber considered the amendment of its standing rules to clearly define the terms of eligibility to contest the seat of the Senate Presidency.

Other amendments made in the standing rules were to clearly define the functions and jurisdictions of new standing committees created in August .

The Senate had on the 7th of August this year , increased its standing committees from 63 to 74 .

President Tinubu had in an executive communication to the Senate , requested that the upper legislative chamber confirms the appointment of Jamila Ibrahim, Abbas Balarabe and Ayodele Olawale as Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Senate hopes to consider this request at its next legislative sitting.
