Scaloni Unsure Of Argentina Future After World Cup Final Defeat

Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has cast doubt over his future with the national team, saying he will take time before deciding whether to continue in the role after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking after Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the World Cup final, Scaloni admitted the emotional toll of the tournament and suggested the current squad may represent the end of a special era in Argentine football.

“I deserve to take the time to decide what I’m going to do,” Scaloni said, according to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on X.

“I will fulfill the contract until December and then will think what to do.”

The 48-year-old added: “It’s very unlikely a group as wonderful as this will ever come together again, and that hurts me deeply.”

Scaloni took charge of Argentina in August 2018 following the country’s disappointing round-of-16 exit at the FIFA World Cup in Russia. Initially appointed on an interim basis after Jorge Sampaoli’s departure, he was later confirmed as permanent head coach and has since overseen one of the most successful periods in Argentina’s football history.

Under his leadership, Argentina ended a 28-year trophy drought by winning the 2021 Copa América, defeating Brazil 1-0 at the Maracanã to secure the country’s first major title since 1993.

He followed that triumph by guiding La Albiceleste to victory in the 2022 Finalissima, where Argentina thrashed European champions Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium.

Later that year, Scaloni led Argentina to their third FIFA World Cup title in Qatar, defeating France on penalties after an unforgettable 3-3 final, with Lionel Messi finally lifting the sport’s biggest prize.

His team continued its dominance by successfully defending the Copa América title in 2024, beating Colombia 1-0 after extra time in the final to become back-to-back South American champions.

At the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Scaloni guided Argentina to a second consecutive final despite a difficult knockout campaign. The defending champions edged Cape Verde before producing a remarkable comeback from two goals down to eliminate Egypt in the round of 16. Argentina then defeated Switzerland after extra time in the quarter-finals and overturned another deficit to beat England 2-1 in the semi-finals.

Their quest for a fourth World Cup title, however, ended in Sunday’s final, where Ferran Torres scored the decisive extra-time goal to hand Spain a historic 1-0 victory.

Since taking over in 2018, Scaloni has transformed Argentina into one of world football’s dominant forces, winning the Copa América twice, the Finalissima and the FIFA World Cup, while leading the Albiceleste to another World Cup final and establishing one of the longest unbeaten runs in the nation’s history. His current contract with the Argentine Football Association runs until December 2026.
