According to reports, early on Sunday, Kyiv and its surrounding region were subjected to an intense bombardment by Russian drones and missiles, an incident which marks one of the most significant attacks launched against the Ukrainian capital since the full-scale war commenced.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, reported via the Telegram messaging app that the attack resulted in at least three fatalities and approximately 10 injuries in the city, noting that one of the deceased victims has been identified as a 12-year-old girl, though he stressed that this particular detail remains unconfirmed officially, Reuters reported.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia had launched a “massive” air attack on the country involving hundreds of missiles and drones.
He said the attack underlined the need for more punitive sanctions against Russia to force it to stop its aggression.
“Putin must feel the danger of continuing this war —personally for him, his buddies’ pockets, his economy, and his regime,” he posted on X, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin. “That is what can make him stop this senseless war.”
The strikes also impacted several other regions, according to authorities. In the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, at least 16 people were injured, a figure which included three children.
Footage circulating on social media channels from Zaporizhzhia confirmed significant damage to several buildings, many of which were left on fire following the strikes.
Witnesses reported that drones flew over Kyiv for several hours, accompanied by anti-aircraft fire and loud explosions. The assault was still ongoing as of 9:15 a.m. (0615 GMT). Mayor Vitali Klitschko later confirmed that the strikes resulted in a fire breaking out at a state cardiological hospital.
Some residents fled to metro stations deep underground for safety, sleeping on makeshift beds or sitting on deck chairs following events on their phones.
Neighbouring Poland closed airspace near two of its southeastern cities and its air force scrambled jets in response.
