The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old woman, Somtochukwu Nwafor, in connection with the gruesome murder of a pregnant nurse whose mutilated body was recently discovered in a soakaway pit in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area.

Nwafor was apprehended on 25 July 2025 with the support of residents of Umueri village in the Ogbunike community.

According to police authorities, she confessed during interrogation to being the girlfriend of the prime suspect, Chiemerie Obika Elobisi, who is currently on the run.

The suspect admitted that she was summoned by Elobisi to clean up bloodstains after the murder. She also revealed that body parts from the victim were sold to various native doctors in the area.

Preliminary investigations suggest the victim, a trained nurse, was lured to the suspect’s residence under the pretext of offering medical help.

Acting on the information provided, operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) raided a shrine belonging to a known native doctor, Nwafor Chibunna Ofornwatadile, from Itima Amawa Village, Ogbunike, in the early hours of 29 July.

There, they recovered suspected human body parts concealed in cellophane bags.

A manhunt has been launched for Elobisi and other individuals suspected of receiving or collaborating in the crime.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the killing in the strongest terms, describing it as “inhumane, criminal, and an affront to public morality and the sanctity of life”.

He appealed to members of the public to provide credible information that could aid the investigation, assuring that the identity of informants would be protected.
