The Cross River State Police Command has foiled a kidnapping attempt in Calabar South, arresting three suspects and recovering two locally made pistols along with a live cartridge.
In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Irene Ugbo, the operation was carried out by the Divisional Police Officer and Surveillance Team from Uwanse Division following a credible tip-off. The suspects were intercepted while attempting to abduct one Nkereuwem Peter, a 38-year-old resident of No. 35 Eneobong Avenue, Calabar South.
Upon sighting the officers, the suspects opened fire but were quickly subdued and taken into custody.
Those arrested include Henry Efa Otu, aged 24, of Efut Effioene Street, Calabar; Lawrence Ita Inyang, aged 46, of No. 32 Efut Effioene, Calabar; and Umoh Ekpo, aged 46, of Efut Effioene Clan, Calabar.
Commissioner of Police, CP Rashid B. Afegbua, commended the swift response of the officers and warned criminal elements that the Command is fully committed to dismantling all forms of crime across the state. He urged members of the public to continue sharing timely and credible information with the police and other security agencies to aid effective policing.
Investigations are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects. The recovered weapons—two locally made pistols and a live cartridge—are now in police custody as evidence.
